Directv started with a very basic system. It was only capable of one line to one satellite receiver. Those systems by the way cost about $700 at the time. I know because I bought one of the first ones in Ohio in 1992. As Directv grew it's ability to network grew. The electonics on the Feedhorn became consolidated. Functions such as switching between differnet polarities evolved from a servo motor to 13-18 Volt switching. The multiswitches have changed accordingly.
About 1999 and before the technology was for only one coax output on a lnbf. People however had 2, 3, and 4 tvs. For each coax on an lnbf you get to view one tv and one tv only. By 2000 the industry had risen to a dual lnb which meant that if you want to view two tvs you can view two tvs. At that point switches became popular. Many people wanted more than two tvs and they needed a satellite switch to accomplish the goal. Hence the creation of the 3x4 satellite multiswitch.
At one time Directv had only a single output lnbf. This was amaizing tech
